Commissioned for the 1962 consecration of St. Michael’s Cathedral in Coventry, Benjamin Britten’s monumental opus stands as one of the most compelling and universal statements of the futility of war. Built on musical precedents set by Haydn, Beethoven, Verdi, and Vaughan Williams, and juxtaposing the ancient Latin text of the Requiem Mass with the 20th-century anti-war poems of British soldier Wilfrid Owen, the War Requiem embodies both despair and hope. Don’t miss a rare opportunity to experience this infrequently performed choral masterpiece in the cathedral-like setting of Duke Chapel.
